Adult head lice are super tiny, around 2-3 mm, six-legged insects that attach to the scalp and neck and lay their eggs on the base of their host’s hair shaft. Head lice are spread by head-to-head contact. Lice seem to have an easier time infesting on younger children more often than others, but adults or anyone who has come in contact with someone who is lice-infested is also at risk of becoming infected with head lice. Once the lice leave the protection of the hair and are no longer feeding off of the blood, the clock begins ticking on their time of survival unless they find another host. 

The Reality

If a person is bald, then the odds of them getting and maintaining a head lice infestation are drastically lower than others with hair. With no hair for the lice to hold on to, hide in, and lay their eggs on, any lice that might find their way to a bald person’s scalp die or fall off quickly. 

So, while a bald person can have lice on their scalp because of the lack of hair, the lice have a hard time getting to the scalp, and once the lice get there, their environment is super uncomfortable and isn’t conducive to long term survival. Also, while lice are super small, they are easy to see if they are just hanging out on a bald head, so the lice would be extremely at risk of being caught.

What about facial hair?

Although bald people can get head lice, the odds of them having an actual infestation is almost impossible. Thin hair on sporadic hair is still susceptible to head lice, just like an infant’s head.
