Common Signs Your Child Has Lice

Common Signs Your Child Has Lice

What are lice? Lice are parasitic insects that are about the size of a sesame seed. They can only be spread through head-to-head contact and children are more likely to get lice than adults. Even if your child has good hygiene, there is still the possibility of a lice infestation as hygiene is not an indicator of whether or not you can catch lice. If you are worried your child has lice, what signs should you look for?

Signs of Lice

When looking for signs of lice, the most common sign is itching. If you notice your child is itching their scalp more than usual, that is a big indicator of lice.

Other symptoms include:

  • A tickling feeling of something moving on your head
  • Sores that developed from scratching
  • Irritability
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Red bumps on your head, neck, or shoulders

What to Do if You Believe Your Child Has Lice

If you believe your child has lice, you can do a head check to be sure. To check the scalp, you should look for small, brown insects moving around on the head. You should also look for lice eggs or nits stuck to the hair. Lice eggs or nits look like a small, oval blob on a strand of hair. If nits are yellow, tan, or brown, it means the lice haven’t hatched yet. If the nits are white or clear, the lice have hatched, and just the egg remains.

The most common places to find lice and lice eggs in hair are around the ears and near the neckline at the back of the head. It is important to note that if you believe your child has lice, you should make an appointment at a lice clinic immediately. Leaving lice untreated could cause sores to form on the head. These sores can lead to infection, resulting in your child getting sick. Although getting sick from lice is the worst-case scenario, it is better to address the problem sooner rather than later.
