Why Most Kids Get Lice in the Summer

Summer is an exciting time of the year- with all of the summer camps, playdates, sleepovers, and sporting activities kids are having tons of fun in the sun with their friends. However, with mass amounts of kids gathering in close contact to one another, lice are able to easily move from head to head- making summer one of the most common seasons for lice infestations.

What Should I Do If My Child Gets Lice?

Don’t worry, you can still send your kids to their favorite summer camp or allow them to partake in various fun summer activities!

If you don’t want your child contracting head lice this summer, there are some precautions you can take. For children with long hair, tying it back is always recommended. If they’re old enough, you can even teach them about how to avoid lice. Warn them to avoid head to head contact at all times with other children, as this is the most common way lice can spread.

Of course, the most important precaution a parent can take is to check their child’s hair frequently. Spotting signs of lice early may be difficult, but it prevents catastrophe in the long run. Lice are grayish-brown and will be cemented to the hair roughly ⅛” to ¼” from the scalp.

Lice eggs can be difficult to spot in darker hair, or early on in an infestation.  Carefully combing through the hair from the scalp outward, using a fine-toothed lice comb, can help a parent find lice eggs that might not be seen upon visual inspection of the head.
