Can You Treat Lice with Sodium Chloride?

Can You Treat Lice with Sodium Chloride?

A head lice infestation can make your scalp extremely itchy and cause scabbing due to excessive scratching. It may also feel uncomfortable as insects are crawling around on your head! The good news is that seeking treatment quickly can help you get rid of lice and restore your comfort. However, you have to be careful which treatment you choose, since many of them contain toxic ingredients that can be too harsh on your skin.

One recent rumor we’ve heard at Fresh Heads is of parents trying to use sodium chloride (table salt) as a lice treatment—but does it work? We’re here to set the record straight.

What Are Head Lice?

Head lice are parasitic insects that cling to human hair and feed on blood from the scalp. They are easily spread by head-to-head contact. Head lice infestations are common, especially in kids. According to estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are up to 12 million lice infestations in the United States every year.

Is Sodium Chloride Effective at Getting Rid of Lice?

When faced with head lice, it’s understandable that parents would want to quickly resort to readily-available home remedies in order to try to eliminate the problem right away. After all, having a possible solution right in your own home sounds great, but it doesn’t mean it will work. The fact is that the efficacy of table salt has been tested, and there’s no scientific evidence that it can kill lice or nits.

The Danger of Home Remedies Like Salt

Attempting to treat lice with home remedies are not only ineffective, they can also be downright dangerous for your child. This is because the suggested method for these types of treatments is that they are applied for a prolonged period of time, which can be traumatic and uncomfortable. For instance, the mayonnaise treatment necessitates you wrap your child’s head in plastic wrap for 8 hours, which carries the danger of suffocation. Likewise, applying sodium chloride or table salt can be harmful for your child, and cause burning and stinging. And unfortunately, since these treatments are ineffective, you will only have prolonged and escalated your child’s infestation.

Reach Out to Head Lice Treatment Experts

Treating head lice can be tricky, especially since there are various treatments on the market. But remember that these products are not effective, and many contain harsh chemicals that can do more harm than good. Over time, super lice have built a resistance to the pesticides in over-the-counter lice shampoos.

If you need a more professional and effective treatment, you can head to a lice removal center like ours. Our removal methods are all-natural. We offer products such as our specially-formulated DIY lice removal shampoo, and services such as our professional comb-out and our signature AirAllé® treatment that dehydrates and kills lice and eggs in a single visit.

All About the AirAllé Treatment

All About the AirAllé Treatment

Families can experience bouts of lice that can quickly become problematic. Whether kids get it from their friends or are exposed elsewhere, an infestation can then quickly spread to other family members and spiral out of control if not taken care of quickly and correctly. This makes visiting a head lice clinic in Jacksonville, Orlando, or Savannah a necessity when your family is having an outbreak.

Professional lice treatment can save the day through cutting-edge technology like the AirAllé® device that offers quick and effective treatment. The professionals at Fresh Heads Lice Removal are well-trained to use expert application techniques with the AirAllé for seamless removal. Here’s more information about the innovative technology:

The AirAllé Device’s Ease of Use

The AirAllé device is an FDA-cleared device that works by blowing warm, dry air through the applicator tip onto the scalp’s affected areas. It’s somewhat similar to a hairdryer, except the air expelled by the device is cooler and dryer. The AirAllé treatment lasts for about 30 minutes of the 90-minute appointment. The applicator tip helps penetrate beneath the hair’s insulating layer, lifting strands and directing airflow through to the lice and eggs. By doing so, the device tackles the issue of treating lice that are nestled close to the scalp or attached to the hair at the roots.

Safety of Use

Unlike OTC lice shampoos commonly found in grocery stores that rely on pesticides and harsh chemicals, the AirAllé is all-natural and does not use any chemicals. It only uses warm air at the right temperature and low-humidity. It’s highly effective because it completely dehydrates both the adult lice and lice eggs in one treatment.

How Successful Is the AirAllé Device?

Throughout the US, the AirAllé device has completed more than 700,000 treatments and is now known as the modern way to treat lice infestations. It’s the safest option for children, as this method is free of any harmful chemicals. It’s also painless, non-messy, and doesn’t take long—the perfect treatment for little ones.

Science-Backed Treatment

The AirAllé device was developed through years of science to find the most effective way to treat lice infestations in children and adults. The AirAllé’s safety and effectiveness put it at the top of its class, making it the method of choice for most families struggling with infestations. This is why Fresh Heads Lice Removal Clinics has chosen to be an exclusive provider of the AirAllé treatment.

What Expectant Mothers Should Know About Head Lice

What Expectant Mothers Should Know About Head Lice

Expectant mothers know that pregnancy often feels like a larger-than-life journey. While it’s a happy moment worth celebrating, there are plenty of challenges that make it feel like a roller-coaster ride. In between the lively and chaotic months during pregnancy, scratching your head over lice is the last thing mothers should worry about.

What Are Head Lice?

Head lice are blood-sucking insects that survive by latching onto hair and thriving from the blood from your scalp. While infestations can come with intensive itchiness throughout the scalp, it’s important to know that the cause isn’t related to personal hygiene.

The most common way lice spread is through head-to-head contact. Even the slightest brush between heads is more than enough time for female lice to attach to your hair. However, your chances of getting infested from items such as shared hairbrushes or other hair accessories are extremely low and practically impossible.

While there are various ways to treat lice, the most crucial factor to consider is whether or not the treatment plan is safe for pregnant women. This begs the question: is it safe to use lice treatment during pregnancy?

Treating Head Lice During Pregnancy: What to Avoid

Some people opt for at-home remedies such as mayonnaise or olive oil which aren’t safe or effective. These home remedies may be tempting, but they can take a lot of time and won’t clear your scalp from lingering lice or nits. It’s also tempting to try to eliminate the infestation by hitting them with the harsh chemicals found in OTC lice shampoos, but these solutions contain pesticides and toxins that can affect your and your baby’s health.

Treating Head Lice the Right Way: Effective and All-Natural Treatment

It might seem tricky to find an all-natural treatment for head lice that’s effective, but thankfully they exist. At Fresh Heads Lice Removal, we offer professional lice removal services using our all-natural AirAllé® Device. This FDA-cleared device blows warm, dry air onto your scalp, which dehydrates and kills adult lice and lice eggs in a single treatment. It’s all-natural and completely safe.

Is It Possible to Get Lice Even While on Lockdown?

Is It Possible to Get Lice Even While on Lockdown?

While going into, or back into, lockdown over the past few months has caused some level of inconvenience for many people, there are a few good things to come out of it, the most obvious one being everybody’s safety. Some parents undoubtedly rejoiced because it meant one thing for their children: no lice!

Unfortunately, lice are resilient little pests that find their way onto the heads of anybody that comes near enough to facilitate head-to-head transmission. Aside from that—since the life cycle of lice is quite long—some children might have gone into isolation carrying nits on their heads!

Although a lice infestation may seem completely baffling and can be a real nuisance, getting rid of lice isn’t impossible. Here are some of the ways that you can spot nits and lice on your child’s head and provide the right lice treatment as soon as possible:

Fighting the Life Cycle of Head Lice in Lockdown

Since going into lockdown, complaints about the sudden appearance of lice have not been uncommon. Dubbed “iso-nits”—nits that started showing up even during isolation—these pests have exasperated parents everywhere. This can happen even without visitors during the lockdown, as long as your child or anybody in your family has come into close contact with someone carrying lice before the lockdown.

What’s surprising about lockdown lice is that they seem to appear months after children have been in contact with anybody outside of the house. Though your little girl might have played with her best friend a week before going into isolation, the pesky lice might not appear until almost a month later, when you find your children needing lice treatment.

These surprise infestations can be explained by understanding the life cycle of a louse, which lays its eggs (the nits) over sixteen days before dying. About a week later, the nit hatches and molts for about two weeks before becoming a full adult louse that can reproduce. The female then lays eggs two days after mating—then the cycle starts all over again.

Based on these critters’ life cycle, it can take weeks before anybody notices the lice until the typical symptoms, like incessant scratching, start. Head lice are also much more common than people think, and there are some cases where they can come and go undetected. For those that aren’t so lucky, it might be too late before discovering that lice treatment is required.

Dealing with Resilient Lockdown Lice

If you have found lice in your home during this time, there are some things to know about your options for treating them. The first thing to note is that typical OTC lice shampoos and home remedies you can get at the grocery store are not effective against the super lice of today. Lice are a problem that requires professional treatment. The good news is, there’s a range of professional treatment options available for whatever your comfort level is at for venturing out at this time:

What Not to Do When Your Kids Get Head Lice

What Not to Do When Your Kids Get Head Lice

One of the most upsetting things you’ll experience is when you discover that your child has head lice. For most parents, when they find these tiny parasites on their kids, they panic and make rushed decisions. If you’ve just discovered your child has lice, you might be panicking at this very moment. However, there’s no need to worry, because Fresh Heads is here to help steer you in the right direction.

How Did My Child Get Lice?

Head lice are transmitted through head-to-head contact, and is most common in children between ages 3 and 11. This age range is more likely to engage in head-to-head contact in playground and classroom settings, or while hugging their friends on playdates and sleepovers.

No matter how your child got their head lice, there’s a few tips you should be aware of from the start. Here’s what not to do:

1. Don’t Ignore the Source of the Head Lice

As soon as you discover your child has lice, take a moment to think over how your child could’ve gotten the lice in the first place.

Since head lice is spread through head-to-head contact, make sure that you inform other parents and figure out how this started. When you figure out the source of the head lice, you can tell other parents about the situation, so they, too, can take the necessary action. Doing this early helps stop the spread of lice in your child’s social circles.

2. Don’t Forget to Contain the Problem

When you discover that your child has head lice, take the necessary steps to prevent lice from spreading to other family members and kids by containing the problem. To do this, have your child avoid hugging and other close contacts until they are treated.

If you get lice removal service for your child, the specialist will advise you on how to prevent the spread of the problem, should you encounter this experience again.

3. Don’t Overlook Understanding the Life Cycle of Lice

If you want to get rid of lice properly, you need to understand the parasite you’re dealing with. You should know that head lice have a life cycle, and to get rid of them successfully you have to choose a treatment that is effective at every stage of the cycle.

When you see lice, they might be in any of these forms:

  1. Head lice eggs or nits, which are small and oval-shaped.
  2. Lice nymphs, which are greyish white in color and are a tiny version of adult lice.
  3. Adult head lice, which are tan-colored and move quickly along the hair or scalp.

Now that you know the different stages of head lice, you need to make sure that you use the right treatment so that you can adequately get rid of lice in all their forms.

4. Don’t Skip Professional Help

Home remedies and OTC solutions have proved ineffective over recent years because lice have developed a resistance to chemicals, therefore it’s always a good idea to seek professional help and get lice removal services from a reputable clinic. When you don’t seek professional help, you may be using the wrong type of treatment, and your kids may deal with this head lice issue for longer, which could ultimately affect the health of their hair and even cause problems with their sleep.

Although lice don’t cause any diseases, they can still cause irritation and itchiness in the scalp. Because of this some kids will find it hard to sleep and rest, affecting their overall health and well-being.

Why Home Remedies for Lice Removal Don’t Work

Why Home Remedies for Lice Removal Don’t Work

Some parents don’t immediately seek help from professional lice removal services when their kids get lice. Instead, they try to treat it themselves with home remedies. This often leads to disaster—since these treatments are ineffective, the lice continue to spread and the infestation worsens. So, before you spend the next couple of hours rummaging through kitchen and bathroom cabinets for home remedies for lice, read through our reasons why they won’t work, and find out what to do instead.

Top Home-Remedies for Head Lice (and Why They Don’t Work!)

Here they are—the top-touted home remedies for head lice, and why they won’t work for removing lice or lice eggs from your child’s head:

1. The Olive Oil Remedy

With this method, olive oil is supposed to be applied to the hair and left for 6-8 hours to “stifle” the lice. In order to contain the mess of having a sticky, smelly substance in their child’s hair, many parents will try to wrap their child’s head with plastic wrap. Not only does this method submit your child to having to endure the stickiness and smell for hours on end, it also puts them in danger of suffocation. This treatment is also not meant to be a one-time thing—instead, you are supposed to repeat the process as necessary until you don’t see any more lice. What the proponents of this method don’t tell you is that, unlike professional lice treatment, olive oil doesn’t kill lice, or lice eggs. Therefore, the lice will persist, and you will have to keep repeating the treatment. Add in the cost of olive oil, and all you have is a treatment plan to drain your wallet.

2. Mayonnaise Treatment

Similar to the olive oil treatment, mayonnaise is supposed to be applied to your child’s head and left for hours to suffocate the lice. Just like with olive oil, this subjects your child to enduring the terrible smell and discomfort, and puts them in danger of suffocation. The mayonnaise does not harm the adult lice or lice eggs, which means that at the end of this long and torturous journey (for you and your child), your child will still have lice.

3. OTC Lice Shampoo

When they emerged onto the market, OTC or over the counter shampoos were touted as the ideal solution for getting rid of head lice. However, over the years, the repeated use of these pesticide-containing shampoos have served to bolster the pest’s immunity to it by helping them develop resistance. Ever heard of super lice? So, just like olive oil or mayonnaise, OTC shampoos are not effective against the super lice of today. Aside from that, there are concerns about the safety of the ingredients in these products, such as the neurotoxin, which has risks when overused.

4. Cutting Off All Hair

This home remedy might seem like it would do the trick—however, did you know that female lice place their eggs on the hair shaft as close to the scalp as possible for warmth? Suddenly that ¼ inch buzz-cut is now down to shaving your child’s head bald. The reality is that you would never be able to get a close enough buzz cut with clippers to eliminate lice. Once you factor this in (plus the trauma of doing this to your child), suddenly head-shaving really seems like a bad idea.

Professional Lice Removal is the Way to Go

Thankfully, your child doesn’t need to endure the discomfort of any of these treatments, and you can save yourself the time and effort of trying to treat lice with home remedies that don’t work. Just let the experts at Fresh Heads Lice Removal handle it!

A Guide to Lice Treatment Aftercare

A Guide to Lice Treatment Aftercare

Head lice are pests that can cause much discomfort, and worse, they can spread quickly. They are most commonly spread among children and families with children—individuals who are more likely to have head to head contact. Luckily, there’s an easy way to handle infestations, thanks to the professional lice treatments available today.

However, what happens after the treatment? Many parents ask if there are more steps they should be taking. Remember, that head lice never stray too far from the human head or they can’t survive. Because of this, your primary focus should always be on treating the head of the affected family member and performing head checks on all other family members.

However, after that, it might be a good idea to treat items that the affected family member recently came in contact with, just to be extra thorough. This aftercare can include some light cleaning in certain areas of the house:

Bedroom

Remove all sheets, including pillowcases, along with other items on the bed. Throw them in the washing machine for a thorough wash in hot water, and then dryer dry them. If you have blankets or comforters that you can’t put inside your washer, all you need to do is to put them in the dryer on high for 20-30 minutes, or you can place them in a plastic bag for at least 24 hours.

Clothing

Make sure that all recently worn clothing is washed with hot water. You can dry them in a regular setting.

Couches

If the affected family member was cuddled up on the couch last night for movie night, it might be a good idea to pull any throw blankets off the sofa and throwing them in the wash as well. If he or she laid their head on a certain pillow, remove the cover of that pillow and throw it in the wash, or put in a bag for 24 hours.

Hair Accessories

Since it is highly unlikely that someone will ever catch, or especially re-catch head lice from hair accessories, it is not necessary to treat these. However, if you wish to be completely thorough, you can place combs or brushes in a shallow dish with boiling water, and leave them for 10 to 15 minutes. For other hair accessories, you can put them in a Ziploc bag and place them in the freezer overnight.

Focus on Head Checks

Remember, after a lice infestation, your primary focus should still be on heads. Keep checking the heads of all family members regularly, or bring them to Fresh Heads for our head check service. That way, if there are any signs of lice, you can address them immediately.

Work with a Professional Lice Removal Service

Lice infestation is a drag—it’s uncomfortable, and your child’s self-esteem can take a hit. These pesky bugs may be challenging to remove, which is why you don’t want it to happen again after treatment. Use the aftercare tips shared above to prevent reinfestation and ensure a lice-free household.

Is flat ironing effective in killing lice and nits?

Fact or Myth: Is Flat Ironing Effective in Killing Lice and Nits?

Seeing a bug can really bug a person’s mood, but discovering lice or lice eggs woven into your child’s locks can truly make your skin crawl. It’s an itchy problem that is often hard to scratch at first, which is why parents quickly resort to home remedies to try to get rid of the pesky infestation.

A mixture of oils might seem to be the natural way to kill lice, but these solutions are messy, time-consuming, and ineffective. And for people battling “super lice,” these creepy-crawly villains nesting in your hair can really do a number on your patience, as they are immune to any over-the-counter treatments. One of the most popular “quick fixes” currently circulating on the internet is: using a flat iron to kill lice.

Why Is The Flat Iron Not the Best Tool to Get Rid of Head Lice?

Although it’s true that heat is an enemy of lice, a flat iron is not an effective (or safe) way of administering treatment. Here are the reasons that your flat-iron treatment is doomed to fail:

1. Flat irons have a narrow surface area. Flat irons are long and narrow, providing just a strip of heat that is usually sufficient for its intended purpose: straightening hair. However, while trying to treat lice with the same narrow band of heat, the lice can simply scatter. It would be like trying to gather ants with a spoon. You’ll never get them all.

2. You can’t get close enough to the scalp. On the heels of why reason number 1 will fail (that the lice will scurry away) is where the lice are headed, which is…closer to the scalp. Therefore you won’t be able to get the flat iron close enough to reach them, or if you do, you’ll burn your or your child’s scalp (the scarring from which can turn result in hair loss).

3. Too much / the wrong type of heat. Professional flat irons go up to 450 This not only makes trying to treat you or your child this way dangerous, but intense, moist heat is part of what drives the lice to scatter.

Long story short—using a flat iron to try to get rid of lice is virtually impossible, and trying will only lead you to burn yourself or your child. You’ll never get all of the lice, and leaving any lice at all will lead to another outbreak where these creepy-crawlies come back with a vengeance.

Getting Rid of Lice the Right Way

Everyone struggling with a lice infestation should aim to get rid of lice completely—which means adult lice and eggs. Don’t settle for ineffective, incomplete, or dangerous ways to try to deal with the situation. Opting for professional solutions is always the better choice, especially if you want to get rid of your itchy problems in a speedy yet safe manner.

Fresh Head’s revolutionary Air Allé is an FDA-cleared medical device developed by scientists to be effective against all lice eggs and lice, including super lice. The large application nozzle blows warm, dry air that dehydrates and kills the lice and eggs in one treatment.

Washing this load of laundry in the normal wash won't get rid of the lice.

Understanding Why Lice Can’t Be Killed with Normal Washing

Lice are resilient insects that survive most processes humans perform on scalps and hair. A head lice infestation can withstand washing, blow-drying, hair curling, or straightening. One of the reasons is that lice stay close to the scalp, where hot styling tools can’t reach them.

Furthermore, plain water and ordinary soap or shampoo will not wash them away. Lice have pinchers that help them cling to hair strands. A female louse can lay ten lice eggs per day, which she attaches to a shaft of hair using a water-resistant substance.

In the U.S., head lice infestations are common among pre-school and elementary children and household members of children infected with lice. There are about six to 12 million people who get lice outbreaks every year. Since each insect lives up to a month, a person’s scalp can take weeks to clear.

How Do You Get Rid of a Lice Infestation?

Fortunately, there are many ways you can get rid of lice, although some are more effective than others.

At-Home Treatments

While it may be tempting to try to deal with a lice infestation yourself at home, this method can have its drawbacks. For at-home treatments, your options are to try a comb-out or to try an OTC shampoo. The traditional comb-out method can take a considerable length of time if you’re not experienced at it, and you may miss some lice or nits. OTC shampoos, on the other hand, are full of harsh chemicals that aren’t even effective against the current strains of super lice. Conclusion: although it might seem convenient for you to not have to leave your home, unfortunately, the lice aren’t going to leave either.

Professional Treatments

With professional lice treatment, you can rest assured that your lice are going to be dealt with swiftly and thoroughly. We offer a traditional comb-out and our signature AirAllé treatment.

• Traditional Comb-Out

Our traditional comb-out services are performed by professionals who are trained to quickly and thoroughly rid your hair of lice and nits. This way, you can leave the brushing and shampooing to specialists.

• Signature AirAllé Treatment

At Fresh Heads Lice Removal, we also offer our signature treatment using an AirAllé® machine, an FDA-cleared device proven to dehydrate and kill both adult lice and eggs in minutes.

How Do You Prevent an Infestation?

Instead of letting your guard down to the point of requiring head lice removal, you can take preventive measures. It’s not that easy to contract lice—in fact, head-to-head contact is practically the only way for an infestation to spread. However, since kids are more likely to come in close contact with each other, it puts them at a higher risk of catching lice.

If you know someone who has contracted lice, avoid coming in close contact with them. Live lice can only live for up to 24-48 hours without a human host, and eggs do not hatch once they have fallen off a scalp. If you suspect you’ve contracted head lice, focus your screening efforts on yourself and your family rather than on your home.

If you detect the outbreak early on, using insect and nit neutralizers can be an effective way to stop the spread. When choosing products, opt for those that are non-toxic and made of natural enzymes, such as the ones included in our Treatment Bundle. These break down the glue that holds the eggs in place, letting them fall from the scalp.

Get Professional Treatment for Infestations

Outdoor weather brings with it plenty of opportunities for kids to enjoy outdoor activities. Unfortunately, these activities bring kids in close and potentially head-to-head contact, meaning it carries a real chance of them contracting head lice. Prevent this by taking your child to a treatment center specializing in lice removal if you see signs of an infestation.

This boy has post-lice treatment itching from OTC lice shampoo.

Post-Lice Treatment Itching: Is It Normal?

Thinking about creepy crawlies can immediately make people’s skin crawl, so it’s not surprising that the image of head lice can produce the same reaction, firing up the need to scratch what seems like an incurable itch.

Speaking of which, many people who try to self-treat their head lice still find their heads are as itchy as ever afterward, resulting in a state of panic and paranoia regarding the pesky critters. Before you give in to panic, take a step back, and consider the following reasons behind your post lice treatment itching:

  • Itching Due to Dry Scalp from Treatment
  • Psychosomatic Itching
  • Healing Louse Bites
  • Incomplete Treatment

With that in mind, the list above describes the primary culprits that are causing trouble to your head now.

Reason #1: You Have Dry Scalp from Lice Treatment

Many people are vulnerable to develop a temporary dryness around the scalp due to lice treatments, especially if it comes from over-the-counter lice treatments. These OTC treatments often come with chemicals that can irritate the scalp, causing flakiness, dryness, and itchiness.

Reason #2: You Have Psychosomatic Itching

The thought of bugs can drive many people’s paranoia through the roof, especially something as irritating as head lice. It’s easy to believe that your scalp is just as itchy as before the treatment, if not more so. This phenomenon refers to ghost itching, which means you need to practice self-awareness and grounding techniques to help you focus on reality for what it is. Concentrating on your breathing, hearing, tasting, and seeing can help ground you to the present, and once the itchiness fades away, then you know it’s all in your imagination. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with getting a follow-up lice check-up for your peace of mind.

Reason #3: You Have Healing Louse Bites

Some parasitic insects like head lice leave a lingering irritation around the scalp, one that can last for days even after the removal treatment. This leftover itchiness can be frustrating, but the best way to ease the inflammation is to stop scratching as the more you give in to the itch, the more the bite will reopen. Adding cold compress can ease the itchiness, though you can take a low dose of antihistamine if it feels too overwhelming.

Reason #4: You Still Have a Head Full of Lice

If you treated with OTC lice shampoo, the dreaded truth is that you may still have a head full of lice. While it’s bad news, keep in mind that it’s a common issue as lice tend to resist over-the-counter lice treatments, which is why going for professional head lice removal services is the better choice if you want a higher guarantee of ridding yourself of lice completely.
