5 Steps to Take When You Discover Head Lice

Have you discovered a case of head lice in your home and you don’t know where to begin? Your first inclination may be to panic and go on a deep-cleaning frenzy! Try to keep calm. There are some fairly straightforward steps you can take towards an effective head lice treatment that lasts and keep your sanity while you’re at it.

1. Don’t panic. While they are most certainly a nuisance and can be a bit uncomfortable, head lice do not cause harm or carry any diseases.

2. Check everyone’s head in your household. Comb through each person’s hair carefully. If one person has head lice, chances are others in the family do too. And it’s much more sensible to treat everyone at the same time. Lice spread most commonly from head to head contact and by shared objects such as hats, brushes, pillows, and blankets.

3. Decide on a treatment plan. There are many options on the market. For quick and effective head lice treatment in Jacksonville or Orlando, you can contact a treatment center such as Fresh Heads. Aside from traditional comb-outs, they offer an FDA-approved heated air treatment called AirAllé and a line of non-toxic DIY products if you prefer to go it alone.

4. Do some housecleaning. It doesn’t take a monumental effort like you may have feared. Most importantly, you’ll want to clean all clothing and bedding that’s been used in the last 48-hours with hot water and throw it in the dryer at high heat. The same goes for any stuffed animals or other fabric items. Vacuuming sofas, mattresses, and carpets that have been recently used by those infested is also a good idea. Soak combs, brushes and other hair items in hot water overnight.

5. Notify friends and your child’s school. It might seem embarrassing, but don’t let it be. Head lice is an equal-opportunity pest and not a sign of uncleanliness. It’s important to notify others to reduce the chances of a re-infestation.

If you’re ready to schedule effective head lice treatment in Jacksonville for you and your family, call Fresh Heads Lice Treatment Center today. Their FDA approved AirAllé Head Lice Machine is a science-based, chemical-free, effective lice treatment that comes with a 45-day guarantee!

What is Causing My Head to Itch – Dandruff or Head Lice?

Our experts at Fresh Heads Head Lice Treatment Center, are often asked how to tell the difference between dandruff and head lice. It’s true that both conditions are common and cause uncomfortable itchiness. The good news is that both conditions are treatable using their unique treatments.

Dandruff, also known as seborrheic dermatitis, is basically flaking of the skin on your scalp. These flakes, called “dandruff scales,” can look dry or oily, white or yellowish in color. Buildup from your hair products such as shampoos can cause dandruff. Other common causes include excessively dry or oily skin or an autoimmune condition like psoriasis. Dandruff usually affects people who are older than the preschool age and is most prevalent in adolescents and young adults. You can’t catch dandruff from other people, but dandruff can be genetic.

In the case of dandruff, it’s simply the dryness of your scalp that causes you to want to scratch your head. In some cases, fungal infections may have led to skin flaking and dryness.  Medicated shampoos are recommended to treat dandruff as these special shampoos are designed to slow the skin-shedding process. It is recommended to look for shampoos with coal tar, salicylic acid, ketoconazole, or selenium sulfide.

Head lice, on the other hand, are contagious bugs – sometimes referred to as head lice louse or insects. If one member of your household becomes affected, the chances are pretty good that other family members are also affected. Head lice can crawl and spread through close contact with others or by crawling onto clothing, bedding, towels, or combs and then onto someone’s head. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), twelve million children are affected every year, mostly preschoolers and elementary school-aged children. That is a huge number of households needing head lice removal services to get rid of those unwanted little parasites.

The itchy feeling you get with a head lice infestation is caused by the insects’ saliva. As the head louse feeds on human blood, they stay close to the scalp and their saliva causes scalp irritation making you feel itchy. Whereas with dandruff, the itchiness and white specks are annoying and should be attended to at some point, cases of suspected head lice need to be addressed as soon as possible.

Head Lice Take No Holidays!

It’s the time of year when families are making plans to host holiday guests or to be holiday guests.  So what does that have to do with head lice?  Let’s just say that they are often exported or imported by unsuspecting relatives and neighbors.  Families often struggle with infestation after infestation of head lice.  Instead of letting a lousy little bug spoil holiday plans, be proactive.

If you are the visitors to another household, part of your travel preparation should include head checks of your family members.  This will ensure that you are not carrying extra “gifts” to someone else’s home.  Be sure to pack your own brushes, combs, as well as other hair accessories so that you do not have to borrow items belonging to your host family.  For overnights, bring your own pillows.  When the celebrating is over and you are back at home, check heads for crawling lice.  A week later, check heads for nits.

If you are the hosts and hostesses for holiday visitors, it’s a good idea to do head checks prior to your guests’ arrivals.  Have spare combs and brushes available in case your guests forget to bring them.  Sharing items will not be necessary.  After your visitors leave, check your family members’ heads for crawling lice.  Nits should be checked for a week later.

Whether you are the visitor or the visited, know the symptoms of a head lice infestation.  Itching, a tickling feeling of movement on the head, head sores, difficulty sleeping, irritability, and the appearance of lice eggs, or nits, on hair shafts are all indications that head checks and possible treatments are necessary.  If the signs of head lice are threatening to turn your holiday season into havoc, the professionals at Fresh Heads are ready with products and treatments to get rid of that hum-bug.

Don’t Bust Your Budget on DIY Head Lice Treatments

Does your household budget include an amount for do-it-yourself head lice treatments? Probably not. Do you have a jar in the kitchen where you are stashing coins and saving for a head-licey day? Probably not. Head lice infestations are not going to put you and the family in the poor house but they can be costly – in more ways than one – if you choose to take on the little pests yourself.

Let’s say a member of the family contracts head lice. After the initial shock and panic sets in, the do-it-yourselfer will typically purchase over-the-counter head lice shampoo and nit removal combs for the affected person and the rest of the family. With time it becomes apparent that the initial treatment was not successful, so the do-it-yourselfer heads to the internet to purchase head lice treatment products. When they are not effective, there is a trip to the doctor and the pharmacist. For each attempt, there is extra house cleaning, tossing of hair accessories and clothes, extra laundry, and days missed from work and school. These efforts might be repeated again and again over three months, six months, or even a year. Here are some approximate costs of do-it-yourself treatments.

• Over-the-counter head lice shampoo for one person :$45
• Over-the-counter head lice products for the family :$125
• In-store purchased head lice nit removal comb :$7-$45
• Internet-purchased head lice products :$150
• A visit to the doctor for diagnosis and treatment plan :$250
• A prescription lice treatment :$50-$250
• Replacement of personal hair combs, brushes, and accessories :$75
• Extra household cleaning supplies :$30
• Electricity and water required for extra laundry and cleaning :$200
• Missed work for one person :Cost Varies
• Sitters for children unable to attend school :Cost Varies
• Missed school (private) :Cost Varies
• Missed extra-curricular activities :Cost Varies

There are some things, however, on which you can’t put a price; perhaps their cost the greatest.

• Anger, stress, depression felt by members of the family
• Strained relationships with friends and co-workers
• Lack of sleep for a person(s) with head lice and for their caretakers
• Physical discomfort caused by itching from lice bites and burning from pesticides in treatment products
• Countless hours spent combing hair, cleaning, doing laundry
• Missed school and make-up work
• Missed non-fee extra-curricular activities
• Missed social events
• Exclusion from social events
• Unwarranted, unfair stigma and stereotyping
• Known and unknown long-term effects of toxins in over-the-counter and prescription head lice treatment products

Multiply these direct and indirect costs each time you treat and have to treat again in an effort to be rid of head lice. To add insult to injury, THERE ARE NO GUARANTEES!

Fresh Heads Head Lice Treatment Center offers a treatment that will not only save you time and money but that will also come with a 45-day GUARANTEE (All siblings and parents must be head-checked by a Fresh Heads Technician for the guarantee to be valid). The pesticide-free AirAllé ™ Treatment costs $145 per person. This 30-minute non-toxic head lice removal treatment is performed by a Certified AirAllé™ Operator. It includes a full comb-out to remove all remnants of dead lice/nits, an application of Lice-Sense (a non-toxic lice suffocating solution), and essential housecleaning education that will offer simple and effective house cleaning advice. No follow-up treatment is necessary.

So when you do the math, it’s a no-brainer. Your best choice for a head lice removal treatment is the one that leaves you with more time and with more money in your pocket. The pesticide-free AirAllé ™ Treatment offered by Fresh Heads Head Lice Treatment Center will do just that.

Do African Americans Get Head Lice?

Believe it or not, this is one of the most-searched questions on the Internet pertaining to head lice.  The answer is, yes, but not very often. According to Dr. Dale Clayton, renowned parasitologist and inventor of the revolutionary AirAllé Head Lice Treatment device, African American hair is shaped differently than Caucasian, Hispanic, or Asian hair, and lice have a hard time getting their grasping hooks around the shaft. Since lice are uniquely adapted to crawl along a hair shaft, and since lice glue their eggs to the hair shaft, this often prevents African Americans from getting lice. Cultural use of oils actually doesn’t affect this much, contrary to popular belief. It is, in fact, the different shape of the hair shaft that typically insulates the African American population from contracting head lice. At Fresh Heads Lice Removal, we have treated children who have one African American parent and one Non-African American parent. Although the incidence is quite low, less than a quarter of a percent of the families that we treat to have any African American descendants. And now you know!

How to Kill Nits

Truly, killing lice eggs is MUCH more difficult than killing the bugs.  Even the best prescription pesticide is only 73% effective at killing the nits.  The AirAllé™ head lice treatment is currently the only treatment option available that is clinically proven to kill nits entirely.  This treatment is available exclusively at Fresh Heads Lice Removal.  The AirAllé™ treatment takes about 30 minutes to complete and requires no follow-up.  For these reasons, it is our most popular treatment option.

Another way to kill lice eggs is a very thorough manual comb out.  If you are attempting to manually comb nits out of the hair, you need to be ready to comb diligently for 10 days, while also treating every five days with a dimethicone oil treatment.  This way, you kill any hatchlings before they mature to lay new eggs while combing out any remaining nits before they hatch.  It can be done, but it is hard work.

So What DOES Kill Head Lice?

There is good news!  At Fresh Heads, we recommend the use of a silicone oil solution to suffocate lice.  The use of a blended Dimethicone Oil solution specifically formulated to kill head lice is the most effective treatment option currently available.  In a blind study, the use of a properly formulated blend of dimethicone is shown to be incredibly effective at killing live lice.  Additionally, this treatment is inexpensive and completely non-toxic.  Dimethicone will not, however, kill nits.  Fresh Heads uses Dimethicone in all our treatments, and we offer it for sale to the do-it-yourselfer.

Does Mayonnaise, Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, or Tea Tree Oil Kill Head Lice?

Mayonnaise doesn't kill lice! Can you guess our short answer here?  NO!  The idea behind these home remedies is that these oils might suffocate the bugs.  In theory, this is a good idea, but there are major problems with using mayonnaise, olive oil, coconut oil, or tea tree oil to kill head lice.  Here’s a little lesson:  Head lice breathe through their backs.  They have tiny tubes on their backs called spiracles that act as their respiratory system.  The idea with using these oils to kill lice is that you can clog those spiracles, and the lice will suffocate.  But here’s the problem:  Lice can actually cut off those spiracles and hold their breath for up to eight hours! Because these oils are relatively thin, the bugs are easily able to shut those breathing tubes before the oil has a chance to seep into them to block them.  Again, there is not a smidgen of scientific data to back the use of any of these oils as an effective means to kill lice.  Further, as with hair dye, these oils will not do anything at all to the lice eggs (nits).
